Marcala is a Municipality in the southwestern part of the country (La Paz). The area is known particularly for its exceptional coffee quality, which has exceeded its reputation throughout the national and international market. Being this a region with Lenca indigenous background, the arrival of German immigrants during the 18th century made a very peculiar combination of cultures and with the agro-ecological qualities of the region resulted in particular characteristics of the Marcala coffee.
According to historical documents which belong to German historian, Herman Bauch, coffee production in Marcala started in 1866. The modernization and intensification is not done until early 1870’s which coincides with the arrival of German families to Marcala and its surroundings, thus impelling the grain’s industrialization.
